Virginia Utermohlen Lovelace MD explores the aromas of teas, how they come about, and how these aromas interact in the mouth, nose, and brain. She is a Board-certified pediatrician and retired faculty member of the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, where among other activities she earned numerous teaching awards, including the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Before retirement she had begun studies on the biology underlying wine preferences. Since retiring she has focussed on bringing the science behind tea creation and appreciation to interested audiences, both professional and amateur. She has just completed a book summarizing her thoughts: “Tea: a Nerd’s Eye View,” and created a “Scents of Tea” kit with Scott Svihula.
