Grants And Research In Progress

GTI faculty are actively engaged in research on tea. Sample projects and grants in preparation include:

  • USDA Specialty Crop Research Initiative Program Planning Grant in preparation (multi-campus), “Establishing Partnership and Building Infrastructure for Production, Harvesting, Processing, and Marketing of US-Grown Tea.”
  • Gervay-Hague TEAm lab
    • Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant # EAGER:1758530), the Gervay-Hague TEAm lab (https://jghlab.faculty.ucdavis.edu) at UC Davis along with Kearney Agricultural Research & Extension (KARE) Center, located in Parlier, CA have re-initiated a Tea Research Program. In the late 1960s into the early 1980s research at KARE indicated that good, high yielding and high quality tea could be grown in the Central Valley. The research ended and from 14 plants that were preserved as ornamental shrubs on the Center, a new research planting has been in the ground since 2018.
    • Part of this proposed research is evaluating the soil moisture. We now have Watermark soil moisture probes at various depths monitoring moisture levels. You can view this real-time data at:teafield.uckare.org.
